On the night of October 8, 2017, the Tubbs Fire erupted to the northwest of Calistoga, just 3 miles away from the fairgrounds. Residents of both Napa and Sonoma County frantically raced from the flames that quickly spread into Franz Valley, ultimately making their way to Santa Rosa, leaving a wake of destruction in its path. In the early morning hours of October 9, the fire jumped to the northeast side of Calistoga and raced its way up Mount St. Helena where it then jumped Highway 29. Cal Fire and Calistoga officials evacuated Calistoga in the early morning hours of October 11, 2017. The evacuation order was lifted the afternoon of October 15, 2017.
Fortunately, Calistoga was spared from the horrific nightmare that our neighbors to the west have endured for many days.

In September 2015, just north of the Napa Valley, the Valley Fire destroyed nearly 2,000 structures, displacing thousands of Lake County residents and burning more than 75,000 acres. The Napa County Fair Association was called upon to open a shelter for those seeking refuge from the quick-spreading fire. For nearly two weeks, the Fairgrounds in Calistoga was the temporary home for over 1,000 Lake County resident evacuees.
