Napa County Fair in Calistoga Commits to Preserving Fair Traditions

Fourth of July Parade, Fair & Fireworks a proven success!
08/01/2017
CALISTOGA, CA – August 1, 2017 – Every year on the Fourth of July the streets of Calistoga fill with locals, neighbors, and visitors from afar for the annual celebratory parade, fair and fireworks show. This year was no exception, thousands stood curbside to cheer on local leaders, their favorite groups and floats, and a few got the rare chance to pet a mule.

In a town that treasures tradition, the Napa County Fair Association works diligently year round to ensure that the fourth of July festivities are a success. From recruiting volunteers, to seeking out local talent for the Napa County Fair exhibits program, to negotiating the difficult task of contracting a carnival on the busiest summer holiday, and ensuring that the fireworks show is still the best in the valley.

During a time when Fair participation is challenged by new technology, Fair’s across the country are struggling to preserve the age-old tradition of showcasing community and agricultural education. This year, the Napa County Fair is pleased to share that exhibit participation was up over last year and that this year’s attendance was strong.

The weekend kicked off with the Fiesta Mexicana & Jaripero, a beloved family event that celebrates the vibrant and electric traditions of our Mexican heritage on July 2. Then on July 3, Gala a’Fair guests sipped sparkling wine during the sneak preview party that unveiled the Best of Show honors for this year’s prized exhibits.

Ron Goldin, a local artist and first place winner for his oil painting titled San Francisco, said “I love seeing local talent and the Napa County Fair is one of the few events that gives us an opportunity to show it off. I enjoy sharing my work and look forward to the chance to see what other artists and photographers have been working on this past year.”

July 4 started the day with the annual parade, organized and produced by the Napa County Fair Association Board of Directors, a cherished addition to the holiday entertainment. This year more than 50 parade applicants participated, with several honoring local agriculture, art, and culture.

Jamie Graff, Executive Director for Nimbus Arts in St. Helena and long-term participant and supporter for the Napa County Fair and Parade shares, “I have been waking to the excitement and festive activity of parade day for 25 years. We cherish it and the many wonderful events that happen at the fairgrounds, and throughout this wonderful community. These traditions are what give us our story. Our story is one to share, about who we are and how deeply stitched the fabric of this town and its members really are.”

And by providing a pay-one-price admission, everyone who entered the fair was able to ride unlimited carnival rides. Fair hot spots this year included the Make and Take Craft area hosted by the Calistoga Art Center and Kid Kountry. Families gathered to make Fourth of July souvenirs, play giant lawn games, enter contests, and learn about farming.

“We were very excited to see the great turn out and participation this year. Every year you hope to showcase how special and nostalgic the Napa County community really is and we couldn’t do that without the support of volunteerism of our local community,” shares Napa County Fair CEO, Carlene Moore.

As the sun went down, the crowds exploded as everyone settled in for the best fireworks show in Napa Valley. All in all, this year’s Napa County Fair & Fireworks event proves that small town charm invites big time draw.
